What is your name? Dr. Juliette Sweet

How old are you? 34 - I will be 35 on 8/1 so maybe 35 by the time this is published :)

Where are you from? Mesa, Arizona

What is your background? I studied psychology community health in undergraduate school. I have always been intrigued by the mind-body-spirit connection. This led me to Naturopathic and Ayurvedic Medicine. I live in New Mexico where understanding cultural health is imperative for the variety of patients I see. It is fascinating!

In a few sentences, tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do. I live and practice in rural New Mexico but am also part of an integrative clinic in Albuquerque and offer virtual consultations. When I first moved to New Mexico in 2016, I realized how badly Naturopathic Medicine was needed so I started on a political journey of getting NDs licensed here. It was an interesting three and a half years of my life where I learned a lot and made some very close friends. The NDs in NM are a small group of fierce females who were very determined and we did it; NM is the 22nd state that licenses Naturopathic Doctors. Now I am onto my next adventure which is motherhood!

What are you currently doing for hair health and care? I only wash my hair every 3 days. I also use Ayurvedic oils on my hair as it is naturally curly and the ends get dry living in the Southwest. Ayurveda loves oil and there are some awesome hair treatments I like to do with warm oil on the scalp, which is so nourishing!

Are you using any natural hair products (if yes, what are they and what do you like or not like about them)? I just started using Ancient Greek Remedy, a blend of natural oils that can be used on hair, skin and nails. I love it!

What works well for you and what doesn’t? In general, low maintenance hair and haircuts. I don't blow dry, curl or really like to spend time styling my hair. I just like to take a shower and let it dry naturally. I am kind of lazy when it comes to beauty!

What do you like about your hair and what has taken some time for you to accept about your hair? I used to hate my curly hair growing up and did all sorts of things to straighten it. Then, I moved to the Pacific Northwest where the moisture created perfect ringlets. I was so grateful to learn to love my hair during this time! I still love it even though I am living back in the Southwest because now I understand how to keep it curly and healthy with oils.

What are some helpful tips you can share with other readers? Learn about and work with what you have (hair and body!) instead of trying to change it. I did not realize how different curly hair is from straight hair until I found a good stylist who taught me all about the differences and how to support my type of hair.

Please share something different, interesting, or funny about yourself. I have never liked brushing my hair. I remember my Mom telling me that birds would nest in my hair as a little kid because I refused to brush it. I still don't brush it (Shhhh!) but love being a bit of a Rebel. In fact, I do clinical education for an Ayurvedic company called Rebel Herbs :) If I ever wanted dreadlocks I could easily have them, haha!
