What is your name? Jon Bakker, ND

How old are you? 30

Where are you from? I am originally from Littleton, CO and I currently reside in North Bend, WA

In a few sentences, tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do.

- I am a naturopathic doctor and am the current resident at Seattle Healing Arts Center in Seattle, WA.

- I am a passionate patient advocate and believe that our job as primary care providers is to walk alongside people in their health journey through the good, bad and the ugly.

- I really enjoy having people in my office who need care regarding stress-related conditions, men’s health, and thyroid conditions.

- I am a primary care provider who also practices mind-body medicine, biofeedback and physical medicine.

What are you currently doing for hair health and care?

- I get my hair cut once per month at a professional salon by the SAME hairdresser every time.

- I wash and condition my hair once per week.

- I style my hair daily with coconut oil.

- I take vitamin C, zinc, omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin A and I ensure that I eat a diet rich in antioxidants, good fats and adequate protein.

- I do my best to sleep 8-9 hours every night.

- I ensure that I take the time to do those things that make me happy and as prepared as possible to be flexible with the stresses of life.

Are you using any natural hair products (if yes, what are they and what do you like or not like about them)?

EO Shampoo – I love the cost (on a GREAT deal at Grocery Outlet right now!), that it is sulfate free, gluten free, cruelty free, GMO free and has no synthetic fragrances

doTERRA Smoothing conditioner – Listen, I have some problems with the business model and with the fact that there are some serious sustainability issues with mass marketing of essential oils.  BUT they make great products.  This conditioner makes my hair silky smooth.

Coconut oil – When it was suggested I use this to style my hair I had some pretty major doubts.  I had been using pomade to style my hair for years and was not really feeling the change.  I reluctantly gave it a try and I LOVE it.  It is cheap, , allows the curls to come out, and keeps my hair MUCH less oily than the pomades did.

What works well for you and what doesn’t?

The best decisions I have made for my hair were those that were advocated for by the women in my life.  That is my single piece of advice to men, who like me, aren’t strong in the style department.

I have big thick hair.  If I don’t get those hairs thinned out pretty much every hair cut I’m gonna have myself a mushroom top.  It doesn’t look good.

What do you like about your hair and what has taken some time for you to accept about your hair?

I love my curls.  Although most of them were cut off as of recent I feel they are the best part about my hair.

The thing that has taken me the longest to accept about my hair is my widow’s peak.  It goes back a bit further than I care for.  My hair isn’t thinning, but every time I look at that thing I can’t help but feel like it is happening.

What are some helpful tips you can share with other readers?

Find a good hairdresser or barber who you get along with and you trust with your hair.  When you find a good one, you can trust them to try new things with your hair.  Sometimes getting a new “do” is a great way to launch a new phase in life or to help get yourself motivated to make those changes you’ve been eyeballing for months or years.  It gives you confidence.  A physical change can make the mental/emotional space needed to see yourself in a new light.

Please share something different, interesting, or funny about yourself.

I went through a phase where I tried out not washing my hair at all.  I made it about 6 months before my then partner made me wash it.  I still do this day think that she decided it smelled and looked oily only AFTER I revealed this secret.
